What does it mean to be both Muslim and American? You are invited to explore this fascinating and important question this coming summer. You will read compelling texts and conduct engaging field trips as you study the diverse facets of Muslim American identity, both as grounded in the past and as experienced in the present. As an NEH Summer Scholar, you will reflect on and discuss thirty primary source documents and two major academic monographs; visit two mosques; and prepare teaching tools to integrate this information into your existing classes.

Rasul Miller is a PhD candidate and a William Fontaine fellow of Africana Studies and History at the University of Pennsylvania. Rasul received his BA in Economics and African and African American Studies from Duke University. His research interests include Muslim movements in 20th century America and their relationship to Black internationalist thought and West African intellectual history. He serves as editor and contributing writer for the history section of Sapelo Square, an award winning online platform dedicated to the experiences of Black Muslims.

The 2013 Bosnian census figures report by the central government contain an over count of approximately 150,000, a number greater than the population of the third-largest city in the country, and probably due mainly to illegal registration on non-residents in strategically important parts of the country. While EUROSTAT has devised procedures to ensure a more accurate enumeration, the leaders of the three main ethno-national political communities had opposing interests in country nonresident, illegally, as residents.
